Flatlantic Environmental Impact Assessment

Environmental Impact Assessments (Projects)

In 2007, it carried out the EIA, which led to the approval of one of the largest aquaculture operations in Europe – from the embryonic stage through to the packaging of farmed and fattened turbot – in the municipality of Mira (Coimbra District). The project incorporated environmental measures, such as water collection and discharge via tunnel boring, demonstrating the company’s dedication to minimising environmental impact and fostering trust with regulators and industry partners.

In 2022, it carried out the EIA for the expansion as part of the EIA process, which resulted in a favourable EIA decision. The Flatlantic expansion project (currently in the preliminary study phase) involves the expansion of its facilities, with a view to (1) increasing its production capacity and the diversity of its flatfish production (turbot and sole) and (2) ensuring low-carbon energy competitiveness through the self-generation of photovoltaic energy. It will become one of the largest aquaculture production facilities in Europe.
